Speech and language services
Initial telephone consultation

  • When you first contact North Star Speech & Language Therapy, you will be offered a free telephone consultation. This provides you with the opportunity to discuss any concerns that you have about your child’s speech and language development and we can discuss how we can help.
  • If appropriate, we can book in an assessment to take place.

    Assessment

  • During the assessment session we will gather information and fully assess the relevant areas of your child’s speech, language and communication development.
  • Assessment results will be discussed with you and a plan of action agreed.
  • Assessment sessions last for approximately 60-90 minutes and are carried out in your home.
  • A summary report will be included as part of the assessment fee.

    Therapy

  • If your child requires therapy, together we will agree on specific speech, language and/or communication targets and an individualised treatment plan will be devised.
  • The number and frequency of therapy sessions recommended will depend on your child’s needs.
  • Therapy sessions last between 30 – 60 minutes and can be carried out in your home or your child’s nursery or school setting or a clinic setting. Within the session, time will be spent discussing activities and strategies which will allow you to continue practice at home between therapy sessions.

    Other services

  • Attendance at meetings with other professionals
  • Consultation visits to schools and nurseries
  • Written therapy programmes, letters and reports

The Benefits of Private Therapy

Private therapy allows our therapist to provide more individualised therapy tailored to your child’s interests.

This helps facilitate:

  • More direct practice in their sessions
  • Higher motivation and engagement levels
  • More time to provide detailed feedback
  • Bespoke exercises and activities to continue at home

We work closely with parents and families to identify each child’s specific speech and language needs, supporting your child in a fun and engaging way. Speech and language therapy can help your child if they are experiencing speech, language or communication difficulties.

Our service starts with a free informal consultation over the telephone. This gives you the opportunity to tell us your concerns and we can talk about how we can help.

We have no waiting lists. Following the telephone consultation, if you would like an assessment for your child this can usually be arranged within 1-2 weeks.

We support children with a broad range of speech, language and communication difficulties including:

  • Language delay (late first words, late joining words together, delayed use of grammar, delayed understanding of language)

  • Disordered language/ Developmental Language Disorder

  • Speech sound disorders

  • Verbal dyspraxia

  • Stammering

  • Children with complex medical and communication needs.

  • Children who have disordered social communication skills and/or a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Therapy is available through the HSE and from therapists working in independent practice. Many families choose to access both at the same time and use independent services to supplement the support provided by the HSE.

We encourage parents to access HSE services alongside independent speech and language therapy. If your child is also seeing an HSE therapist, with your consent, we will liaise with them regularly to provide the best possible support for your child.
