Schools
Speech and language difficulties often have a significant impact on a child’s ability to access the national curriculum and achieve their learning potential.
At North Star Speech & Language Therapy we can provide support and intervention for children and young people who have been identified as have speech, language or communication needs and for those who have not yet been assessed but may be at risk of communication difficulties.
Once assessments are complete, we can provide recommendations on the next steps – this may vary from group therapy carried out by the school or Speech and Language Therapist to the development of individual pupil programmes.
Teacher / Staff Training
We offer a range of bespoke and licenced speech and language training packages to ensure your staff meet the high-quality teaching standards.
We specialise in helping teachers identify difficulties, as well as teaching staff strategies to develop communication skills. Introducing these strategies helps improve general academic attainment and allows children to understand and express more complex ideas.
Liaison
North Star Speech & Language Therapy will have close liaison with parents, HSE Speech and Language Therapists and other relevant professionals. We also offer a service to attend parents’ evenings and multi-disciplinary meetings.
We are happy to meet with you and discuss the appropriate level of service for you and your school. Please contact us if you would like further information.
Assessment and Whole Class Screening
We offer early intervention screenings for new intakes at both schools and pre-schools, whole class screening for children and young people up to the age of 25, as well as more in-depth assessment for individuals who have been identified as having difficulty with their speech, language or communication skills.
Once assessments are complete, we can provide recommendations on the next steps – this may vary from group therapy carried out by the school or Speech and Language Therapist to the development of individual pupil programmes.
Therapy and Intervention
One to one therapy sessions can be delivered as part of a school service. If there are children who need specialist support following the initial assessment, we can see those children regular for one to one or small group intervention.
Depending of the need identified by screening and assessment tools, there are varying degrees of direct involvement we will provide regarding intervention or therapy. We may work indirectly with a school by training a Special Needs Assistant to carry out intervention designed by is or we may work with schools on whole class strategies and interventions.
Each school may have different priorities for their pupils and staff. North Star Speech & Language Therapy will discuss with the school, all the appropriate approaches available to best suit their individual needs.
Working with SEN Staff
North Star Speech & Language Therapy works together with school SEN staff to jointly manage the speech, language and communication needs of the children in schools. We are available to provide any assistance needed to identify and help the children that need support.
North Star Speech & Language Therapy and the school will look at the wider environment of the school for opportunities to support the development of communication skills for all children and young people and ensure that staff are empowered to provide the necessary support.
